The excitement and disappointment over a diamond auction cancelled by Christie’s in May 2025, has left diamond experts with another wait – which they hope would not be too long. Named the Golconda Blue Diamond, the auction which was hotly publicized by Christie’s was cancelled weeks before the auction date.
A few reports seemed to confuse the 18th century Seraphim Blue Diamond, with the diamond auction announced by Christie’s. Experts promptly clarified that, the Golconda Blue Diamond and the Seraphim Blue Diamond, had a few similarities but, were two distinctly different diamonds.
Both diamonds are said to have originated from the famed Golconda diamond mines. Both were blue diamonds, the Seraphim Blue Diamond is at times described, as having a ‘highly sought after’ shade of blue and a high clarity rating.
Largely elusive for centuries, stories about the Seraphim Blue Diamond gained momentum in recent times. A few diamond experts claim to have seen the diamond, their opinion was that the old mine cut diamond, was a Golconda diamond.
The diamond which was once worn by Asaf Jah 1, the first Nizam of Hyderabad in an opulent turban ornament – exited the Nizam’s treasury after a few decades. An enviable provenance for this historic Golconda blue diamond considering that, Asaf Jah 1 established himself as the first Nizam way back in 1724.
Earlier reports gave a strong indication that the Seraphim Blue Diamond, was now part of a high value Russian collection. Hopes have now been raised about the diamond being put up for auction. There has been no announcement or rumor of a sale until now and this, is quite understandable.
A rare Golconda blue diamond, with a provenance that stretches back to 1724 and a direct connection to the first Nizam of Hyderabad – all the makings of a legendary diamond. An avid diamond collector, would be in absolutely no hurry to part with the Seraphim Blue Diamond.
Irrespective of whether the Seraphim Blue Diamond does come up for sale or not, one thing is certain – expectations of seasoned diamond collectors are at an all time high. The diamond has raised the bar for the next Golconda diamond auction.
